There are large holes in the walls. Doors are being knocked out. Flooring is being removed. It is demolition time in our new house project. The house has great “bones”, it just needs to function a little differently then it does right now. It has bared witness to young families, a ton of firsts and milestones, and watched seasons of life change. Oh, the stories these walls could tell if given the opportunity!
The functionality of the house needs to change and it’s time for renovation. But this new season also comes with renewal. Rooms will not hold the same purpose as they once did. Closets will become bookcases. Outdoor storage will become a pantry. We are breathing new life into the house one modification at a time!
Have you ever experienced renovation in your own life? Skills or talents that were once used in a specific way suddenly get repurposed by God. There is a shift in your priorities and how you spend your time. Your perspective changes and you don’t feel the same way about the things around you like you did before. The comfort of familiarity is replaced with a new functionality. It’s not a bad thing… just different.
I don’t know about you, but change doesn’t always come easily for me. I like familiar. I like comfort. I like knowing what to expect. So when God decides it’s time to repurpose areas of my life so He can use them in new ways, I sometimes resist the process.
Thankfully, the beams and boards we have had to remove and reposition have not been putting up a fight. They seem to welcome the change. They understand their new purpose. They look forward to the future of the lives lived within their walls. They seem to be prepared for a new season and perhaps even welcome it!
Here’s the amazing thing about God – if He takes us through a renovation, it will always be for our good and His glory! We need only embrace the new season and allow Him to use us for His new purpose.
Be blessed,
Jennifer
