It can look like a normal series of events. First A, then B, followed by C. The events could be good, bad, or even unnoticeable. We move through life from moment to moment until something catches our attention – God shows up.
Some call these moments divine appointments, God winks, or even kisses from Heaven. No matter what you call it, in that moment it is obvious God is present. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the Holy Spirit resides within a believer’s heart once they have given their life to God which allows Him to always be present. But these moments are different: they are active, they are intentional, and they are entirely for your good.
The other day, I picked up my phone to listen to a voicemail. I could see by the written transcript below that the caller had left a long message. As I listened, I busied myself with a few other things around my desk. My phone suddenly slipped off my shoulder and fell toward the floor. With ninja-like reflexes (lol) I caught the phone before it landed but managed to hit the delete button as I grabbed it. The voicemail and the transcript were gone! Mildly frustrated, I decided to wrap up my work for the day and return the call in my car on my way home.
I started the call with a confession, “I just received a message from you, but I dropped my phone and accidentally deleted it before I heard what you had to say.” I feel honesty is the best policy and hoped the caller would extend some grace over having to repeat her long message. This confession broke the ice between us and our discussion went deeper than it would have without it. In fact, if I had heard the full message, I would not have even called her since I would have had all the information I needed. But God had another plan in mind. Because we took the time to talk, and I started with my honest (and a little embarrassing confession) I had the opportunity to learn a few things that I would not have known otherwise. God took time out of His busy schedule of, well, maintaining the universe to provide information He knew I would need. God showed up when I didn’t even know I needed Him!
I would like to say you probably have a million examples of this same kind of thing, but do you? We only see God when we stop and consider the moment. Honestly, it wasn’t until a little later in the day when I was telling a friend about what had happened that I realized God had intervened on my behalf. I appreciated learning the information, but I didn’t recognize His hand until I reflected on it later. Oh Lord, please forgive how blind we can be!
This was such a sweet reminder to look for God in every day. When we take time to look for Him move, He is faithful to show us. But this requires intentionality, a slower pace, and a heart that is tender to Him. God is present in our lives every day – do you see Him?
Be blessed!
Jennifer
