My husband and I have been touring homes lately to see if we may want to start the next chapter of our lives in a new location. On the surface, we look for the functionality of a good floor plan, evaluate the beauty of updated decorative features, and consider what the surrounding area looks and feels like. Then we look a little deeper: Is the house energy efficient? Is there any visible damage to be repaired? Are there any cracks in the foundation?
Turns out, that last question is the most important: Are there any cracks in the foundation? Truth be told, it won’t matter how nicely designed or decorated a house may be if the foundation isn’t solid. The changes of weather, shifts of the surrounding land, and even what lies beneath the soil all have an impact on a house. But they can cause a great deal of damage if the foundation is not solid.
You and I are that way too. We can seem to have it all together, be lovely to look at, and even make others feel comfortable around us. But all of those things are merely on the surface, we need to look at each other a little deeper. What do we stand for? Where have we experienced damage in our lives? How strong is our foundation?
Life is challenging and some seasons are harder to endure than others. When storms rage, winds blow, and rain beats against us, how secure are we? Do we run and hide and pray it will be over quickly? Do we try to hide the new cracks and wounds we endure in the empty areas of our hearts and minds? Or do we stand secure in the truth that God protects us and will keep us safe from harm?
Jesus came to be the rock we can build our lives on. Not only did He give His life for ours, but He also teaches us how to live in His truth of His word every day. When we listen to Him, trust what He says about us, and are obedient in how we live our lives, Jesus becomes our firm foundation. He’s the rock that will not crack and will never crumble. We can rely on His strength and build our lives upon it.
I’m not sure where we may live in this next chapter of our lives, but I am certain our lives will be built upon the rock of Jesus Christ – He is our firm foundation!
Be blessed,
Jennifer
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
